#27 NYC Here We Come

We’ll Take Manhattan

NYC content…

Pictures speak a thousand words, and the scenes from movies and tv shows don’t do it justice. I once had a friend who grew up within a 13 block radius of one of the Burroughs of NY… I remember him telling me he didn’t know milk came from cows until he was 10 and hadn’t scene a lawn until he was 13…. I now know how that could be a reality. Interesting and sad for this PNW’er.

Don’t get me wrong, ITS MAGNIFICENT in its hugeness, offerings, diversities, various cultures wrapped into an island. (And surrounding Burroughs..)

Allow me to go back in time, 45 years ago, I did what any young, angry at the parents teenager wanted to do…. RUNAWAY of course.

Growing up in a small town, the desire to get out was always there for me. Bigger adventures, even in the larger (though still small town) Yakima Washington. It seemed so large, different restaurants, The Mall, bigger high schools…. Just cooler. So as a kid of 13 I was going to runaway, hitchhike to Yakima, to the Gear-jammer truck stop and restaurant, get in with a trucker, cross America, and land in NYC… @ 13 mind you.

We’ll the nomadic spirit hadn’t taken root quite yet, and my “runaway” adventure got me to the end of the block to the Lindsey’s house, where sternly though eloquently, Mr. Lindsey said, “Don’t you think your Mom & Dad will miss you?” Yep, after a Peanut Butter and jelly sandwich (Adam’s Peanut Butter no less….. we had to endure Jiffy for our PB&J’s) Ernie sent me home with my grocery paper bag full of all my worldly belongings…(minimal clothing, no food, no money, no toiletries…) where my Mom & Dad hadn’t even realized…I HAD RAN AWAY!!!

So since then, I’ve always had a fixation on getting to NYC someday. Well Mom & Dad…. I made it….

So our trip, this trip, was a pre-Covid planned, honeymoon excursion to NYC, GERMANY, SCOTLAND, COZUMEL then back to NYC and home. A month gone, departing San Juan island mid May 20’ was our reservations. Let me digress, the reservations were incredibly complex, costly and time consuming to put together. This trip of 20’ was going to fall on the heels of a celebratory party for our nuptials as the actual ceremony was only 12 people including the justice of the peace..

We had catering, live music of a phenomenal music friend of ours, what started out to be 40 people quickly became 77 people. Local island rooms were booked, people coming from out of state, across the state and from across the island. So along about Feb-March of 20’ this quaint, international, unknown virus came to the States and for a couple of weeks we all thought (as told to us by our president (not my president..) ) that we could eradicate this flu like bug with bathing in Pine Sol or chloral-septic or ingesting windex glass cleaner….. (something preposterous like these presidentially approved in home remedies) …… so we didn’t give it much thought…. PARTY then VACATION….

Late March, we began realizing this wasn’t going away with a bath or self injecting cleaning products. “Hmmmmm should we cancel the party and just get away?” Early April, the tune changed again….. limits on “gatherings” went from groups of 100 or smaller only, then 50 or smaller ….. then……… we canceled on the heels of 6 or smaller.

All the while,, simultaneously, travel bans were starting to pop up, internationally mostly at this time, the across the states and then “SHELTER IN PLACE”….. the tolls… affected and dying began to grow exponentially. We then realized our vacation and party could wait. So we spent the next 8-12 months unraveling everything….. with no real grasp on how affected we’d all be.

So fast forward to Christmas 20’ planning, we thought we could skulk away to Key West for the holidays. Mid June’ish we begin planning that trip. Intercontinental travel was frowned on but still viable. A sand between our toes Christmas was exactly what we needed. Well we all know what happened next…. ONLY ESSENTIAL TRAVEL… so now we get to unravel that trip. joy joy…

Needless to say, this trip is A LONG TIME COMING…. and here we are…

Great food, touristy things accomplished and bacterial pneumonia….. oh yeah, that pesky bronchial virus that I’d acquired along the way, turned into a 4 alarm, NYC urgent care, standing outside for 90 minutes (with 60 others) waiting to be seen by an urgent care physician, Covid swabbed, three X-rays and a stethoscope later… Bacterial Pneumonia.

Our accommodations @ The Nolitan off Kenmare in SOHO was Great. Spectacular location and view from our 9th floor room. Smaller in size (welcome to NYC) but great staff and yes, the view was award winning.

Before getting the actual diagnosis the night before we left, we’d taken on plenty to see and do. Chicago performance, Top Of Rockefeller Tower VIP tour, subways, Lifts and Ubers, yellow cabs and a pedicab…. Not much we didn’t doin our short visit…

 Did I mention food?

Jack Wife’s Frieda…. Amazing skirt steak with eggs

Fiat Cafe…. Returned visits while there… French Toast like no other

$30 dollar beer tab @ ABC Carpets (just for two beers..)

Street hot dog… had to…

Our stay was brief and full… the almost flawless logistics in putting this together was a beautiful team effort with my lovely bride. Each of us having a task, coming together with our weekly debriefs and edits… we gained a whole new appreciation for actual travel agents.

Things we wanted to, but couldn’t finagle were Jimmy Fallon and getting to Strawberry Fields / John Lennon’s place. But we’re back in three weeks, so who knows… with the phots hopefully you can see the adventures and smiles and NOT the phlegm of Pneumonia.. Enjoy.. :-)
