#18 - 11,550 Miles

West to East to South to West to North

Please excuse the absence, a few adjustments to my course have happened and I'm still smiling... Dominican Republic came and went; our arrival into Puerta Plata wasn't absent a few setbacks that caused this crew member to heed the warning signs that compatibility and some safety concerns wasn't a place I cared to remain.... So I disembarked, traveled the cross country air miles and landed safely with a great peace of mind on the West Coast..

While we are on the subject of updating vessels and crossings... the boat headed to Hawaii that I smartly disembarked a month ago, in fact received the repairs and finally shoved off for their passage. Unfortunately their trek was short-lived with a sneaker wave disrupting their journey on the first 6-8 hours of the trip, throwing the crew around, causing more than a few bruised ribs and egos, forcing the vessel and the dream to be permanently anchored. My heart extended to the end result for all involved.

AFR… What in the world is AFR? Armstrong Family Reunion… an event of monumental proportions, reunion, introduction to our newly found family member Aaron, swim fest, food fest... and T-shirt fest! I was abroad and couldn’t make it, however over that June weekend I was grounded with my heart in the Yakima valley celebrating family from afar….

West Coast bound as I mentioned, the 2 hour co$tly cab ride, the 12 hour wait in the Santiago Dominican Republic airport, the 15 hours of flight and layovers, the time-zone changes, the climate changes all in 38 hours….. it was nice to be back on the West Coast for sure..

One of the first activities after a good nights sleep? Go Golfing of course…(pun intended) The foursome couldn’t have been better, Dix, Louie & Denny… the perfect amount of smart-ass ribbing, coaching, encouraging and keeping me humble when I did connect a few times for a decent drive. I made three field-goals and a Parakeet, so I can’t figure out why I wasn’t invited back.

Update on the Lost Ark of The Covenant…… Still Not found! However a vintage 66 VW Cabriolet was unveiled and is now (was at the time of publishing this entry) still available…. ANYONE? Someone?

The accommodations out there in Yountville are comfortably modest, the company is always entertaining, but what makes the stay even more desirable is the family of turkeys (not available on picture day) and the Deer…. Beautiful family, comfortable enough with people to not be skittish but wild enough to not be tamed… beauty in the soft wilderness….. OH yeah… the local markets non-diminishing supply of Hagen Daz’s mini servings..

I also made a trip south to visit a wonderful lady-friend in San Luis Obispo area / Central California. Ms. Stacy played tour guide and shared Local Ostriches, amazing baked goods, wonderful beaches and Morro Bay….. btw, if you’ve ever wonder where your produce and flowers come from…. I’m pretty sure it’s the Central Calif. Area….

BTW…. Things on you mirror are closer than they appear… ;-)

After a few days there, I was able to put together a great though unexpected, northerly course re-direction to Montana, via Nevada, through Idaho… and my chapter should be called…’Lost in the Desert where I found some more smiles’ It was the most perfect of kismet / serendipitous turns and wrong turns that led me deeper into the desert than I’d ever dreamt possible. Though sure enough, 50 miles off-course, all because I read the sign wrong when it read…. ‘more hot desserts’………. There again, my sweet tooth took me down the wrong path. But the scenery, solitude and YES, smiles I found during that 60 minute, Twilight Zone episode was all well worth it..

1300+ miles later, 2.5 days, 25 hours of driving and I made it…. Montana, where I’d lived for a couple of years almost a decade ago, welcomed me with the beauty I’d remembered and the smiles and hugs from Ms. Liz….. who’s Glacier national Park knowledge and guide service are unparalleled anywhere ! Just see for yourself in this pics… I can call that chapter of pictures; Mountains, Mountain Goats & Glacier Mountain Lilies

YES.... to date, I'm closing in on 11,550+ miles since May 1st.... I literally had a motel clerk earlier this week tell me I 'looked tired'..... Go figure...
