Maxim pulled in to Ponce Puerto Rico on the 14th, not sure yet we could’ve found a better place to land for a few days (ok more the a few ;-)) to do some needed maintenance for upcoming crossings / sailing onward. (re: better place to be? I’ll keep you updated as the trek continues.) Some of it general maintenance & upkeep / some preventive / one or two actual repairs all the while a conscientious spending on the necessities for safe travels. There’s an Owner of this vessel, as it’s a delivery and to say he’s very accommodating and attentive to the needs of crew and boat, would be an understatement… Very Appreciative Don….

Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club / Club Nautico de Ponce… imagine a very large complex, just shy of 100 slips full of fishing / cruising and sailboats of various sizes that await their next outing. Great facilities that include swimming pools, eateries, Commodores club, gym, day-sailing rentals / full marine servicing technicians on stand-by, showers and multiple dance floors… I bring that up last as it’s been a full campus of activities all week with no less than 75+ young school kids that are; tumbling, swimming, playing dominoes, gathering in their small groups to be educated, encouraged and yes….. exercising their talents of dance. As I sat there in the hub of ALL activities, more than a few impromptu dancers / instructors moved to a variety of music. Some Latin themed / top-pop and even some more formal of a yesteryear, as a dance-enthusiast from decades ago, it was all I could do to sit still and not embarrassingly join in… I refrained… (I didn’t want to be the cause of a young person’s therapy years later…)

Thursday nights walkabout around the pier had me stumble upon the Commodores Club here at PYFC, two young ladies greeting guests to a special event as they smiled and asked me, in their wonderful latina accents (__insert fluid Puerto Rican words here__) and all I was able to gather from their words was…. {Dewars / Invitation / Tasting / Welcome} Now Mom & Dad never raised me to be rude to strangers or reject a 12 / 15 / 18 year old scotch tastings. J So as you can see I was dressed for the occasion, the only trouble was, everyone else was in nicer / casual / cabana shirts and linen slacks or summer dresses / ensembles. 25 years of sales / business has prepared me for just about any scenario in life, so to have their judging glances and lofty looks slide off my back was, not a problem. Come to find out, I’m not a scotch kinda guy.

Sunsets? A plethora of hues and horizons is to be enjoyed out here and it’s my intention to inventory as many as possible, along with the sandy beaches and wonderful oddities of this new cultural experience. I hope you don’t mind…. ;-)

Oddities? I'm considering making a Craigslist Posting..’Looking to pay High salary for an exterminator to deal with full-time battle of Mickey / Cucarachas / Ants.... not overwhelmed just a bit foreign… (get it… foreign)

Probably not the first item on that list, however 2” roaches, crawling across the ceiling of my berth…. Creepy, odd, slightly frustrating and a bit fulfilling…. WHEN YOU SQUISH THEM WITH A FULL SWING OF MY WATER SHOES…. VERY FULFILLING! I did give proper water burial though..

(Please send all PETA letters to…..

3026 Idontgiveashit Ave.

Youddothesame Puerto Rico ;-))

Now don’t get me wrong, some things are just the way of life here… Roaches, Humidity, Trade Winds and….. ‘Bump to Pass’ driving. (Index of terms…. Racing terminology, defined as it reads… you nudge the driver in front of you, while simultaneously setting up to pass them as they correct from the bump or careen into the wall or infield…)  Now I’ve been around 5+ decades and a few major cities….. but let’s just say it was here that I was re-introduced to the Rosary…. I’ll let you know how NYC stacks up (no pun intended) but these people are CRAZY! Great example, 60 miles an hour, four cars stacked, two wide / two deep….. with no more than a two feet separating the fenders or the side panels…. 65 mph…. (now let that sit-in for a moment). Another example you ask? 4 lane lane freeway (two in either direction) and 5 wide on the straight aways… I guess ‘shoulder driving’ is encouraged…. Crazy Reckless…. Btw Google maps, in English and all signs in Spanish… with intermittent cell coverage SUCKS for navigating… jus’ saying…. ;-)

Of course the complete alternative to PR-NASCAR on the freeways is Paddle-Boarding… looks simple enough, it’s been suggested that I try it by more than a few people and a far less aggressive commute for sure. I’ll keep you posted on my seeking out the right time and space for this new activity.

Foods –

(sidenote to this category…. On earlier planned trip to Hawaii, the fridge onboard was less than 6 cu. Ft. so I’d anticipateing losing a few lbs… having a full size refrigerator onboard is so nice….. but it’s not conducive to a slimmer figure…)

Ramen (no packet) w/ ham / mai ploy / teriyaki sauce / carrots / onions / raw egg

Fruit Vinaigrette Chicken / mango / veggie medley / saffron rice

Granola – Black berries / strawberries / mango

Kitchen Sink Salads….

Krystal’s Chutney’s
